What we believe

Smarter players make the game more fun—for everyone on the floor. We build habits, decision-making, and confidence alongside fundamentals. Talent matters, but curiosity and work ethic are the real multipliers.

What we develop on the floor

Great training blends repetition with context. These are the core skill areas we emphasize—always tied to reads, spacing, and game situations—not “drills for drills’ sake.”

Ball handling & pressure

Change of pace, protection, and decision-making against pressure so the offense can breathe.

Shooting mechanics

Footwork, balance, release consistency, and shot selection that holds up when defenders fly.

Finishing & footwork

Angles, body control, and creativity around the rim—plus footwork that creates advantages without traveling.

Passing & playmaking

Timing, accuracy, live-ball reads, and “next play” habits that raise the whole team’s efficiency.

Defense & positioning

On-ball containment, help-side awareness, closeouts, and communication that travels to any system.

Rebounding habits

Boxing out, pursuit, and toughness plays that win possessions without needing a spotlight.

Athleticism for basketball

Explosiveness, lateral movement, and conditioning that supports skill—not generic “gym strength.”

Leadership & communication

Voice, body language, and accountability—the invisible skills that coaches trust in clutch moments.

Basketball IQ: what it means here

“IQ” is not a buzzword—it is the bridge between can you do the skill and when should you do it. We train players to see patterns earlier, communicate cleaner, and make the extra pass that wins games.

Decision training

Small-sided games, constraints, and guided discovery so players learn to choose—not memorize. We want solutions, not robots.

Spacing, tempo & roles

Understanding how your role shifts by lineup, score, and clock. We connect individual work to team concepts parents and coaches can recognize on film.

Study habits

We encourage players to watch the game with purpose: tracking tendencies, learning terminology, and building a personal development plan between sessions.

Who we train

Our doors are open to motivated learners. Groups may be organized by age, experience, or goals—ask what fits your athlete best.

Youth & middle school

Foundational habits, confidence, and joy for the game—plus early IQ seeds (angles, spacing basics, defensive stance) that compound over time.

High school & college-bound

Skill refinement, role clarity, and competitive readiness. When appropriate, we connect training goals with evaluation and placement conversations.

Advanced & pro-minded athletes

Detail work, efficiency, and professional habits—preparation that respects the pace and physicality of higher levels.

Coaches, parents & enthusiasts

Terminology, teaching cues, and context so you can support development at home and on the bench—aligned with what we train on the floor.

What families say

Parent of a middle school guard
“Film and skill work finally matched the recruiting plan. We felt informed instead of overwhelmed.”
High school family

For parents & coaches

Development is a team sport. Here is how we help the adults in the building support the athlete—without turning the driveway into a pressure cooker.

Parents

  • We explain the “why” behind drills so you can reinforce the right habits at home.
  • We emphasize patience: compounding beats cramming—especially with young players.
  • We welcome questions about terminology, roles, and what progress should look like month to month.

Coaches

  • We speak the language of modern spacing, pace, and player development constraints.
  • We can align individual work with team concepts when communication is open.
  • We value culture: toughness without toxicity, accountability with encouragement.

What to bring

Simple preparation keeps the session focused on learning. Adjust for your athlete’s age and any instructions from staff.

  • Indoor basketball shoes (clean soles help)
  • Water bottle and light fuel if needed
  • Athletic clothing layered for Portland weather
  • Notebook optional: goals, cues, and “one thing” to improve next time
  • Great attitude: coachable body language is part of IQ

Our standards

Respect for teammates, staff, and the facility. Effort on every rep. Honesty about fatigue or injury. We compete hard and treat people right—those are non-negotiables at Hoop Dreams Basketball.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to common questions. If you do not see your situation here, reach out through your usual Hoop Dreams channel.

Why no Friday sessions?

We build in a weekly off-day for recovery and schedule flexibility. Many families use Fridays for school events, travel, or rest—while still getting consistent work the other six days when sessions are available.

What ages do you train?

We work with athletes from elementary school through professional levels. Placement depends on skill, maturity, and training goals—not hype.

Is this only for elite players?

No. We are passionate about teaching the game to anyone willing to learn. Competitive players will be pushed; beginners will be met with clarity and patience.

How do I join or schedule a session?

Reach out through Hoop Dreams Basketball’s official communication channels or ask in person if you are already connected to our community. Availability is confirmed directly with staff.

Do you offer private training?

Many programs offer a mix of small-group and individualized attention depending on season and coach capacity. Ask what formats are currently available for your athlete’s age and goals.

Do you help with college recruiting?

Yes—college placement is one of our specialties. We support families with realistic guidance alongside skill development, because film and performance have to match the plan.

What is “basketball IQ” in practical terms?

It is the ability to read the floor, anticipate outcomes, communicate, and choose efficient actions under pressure. We train it with constraints, small-sided play, and feedback—just like any other skill.

Can coaches visit or collaborate?

We love aligned development. If you coach a team, tell us what you are emphasizing and we can connect individual work to team concepts when it helps the athlete.
